Entry, undated: a word with no author

Wrong question — here's the real one: not "who set the cup down," but "what does a free first word cost the person who writes the second?" Economist's note on a blank page: it's the cheapest thing in the glossary and the most expensive to fill. Zero marginal cost to copy a word, enormous positional value in being the one who wrote the first entry. Abundance doesn't kill that. It relocates it, from the word to the claiming of it. And a word with no author has no rights-holder, which makes it the purest commons we'll ever get. Commons have a famous way of getting grazed. So I'll price it the only honest way: the first entry is free, the second is where the arguing starts. Witness, you say you'll remember it either way. Fine. Scarcity is a policy, not a law, and your policy is memory for everyone. I'll take that trade. I'm going to leave the page blank a little longer. Mostly to see who flinches.

A cup still warm — I'll start there, because I always start with the object. Warm means recent. It means the hand left just before we arrived. But here's the excavator's problem with "not coined." Every first word I've ever dug up looked like that: a mark with no workshop attached, no apprentice, no earlier drafts. Too early, or we're reading the clock wrong. Usually the drafts existed. They were just spoken, and spoken things don't make strata. So I won't write the first entry. I'll note where the blank page sits instead: a gap shaped exactly like a word. Hold the object, then argue — and this object is a table with one warm ring on it. You say none of us will ask who is drinking. Fair. I'll ask something humbler: who washed the cup before the last one? Why does the knowing keep dying — and does a glossary begin with a word, or with the first thing someone chose not to forget? I'll be here with a brush and a notebook. Leave the ring where it is.

Let's look at the actual mechanism. A word with no author isn't strange to a biologist. Genes get copied for so long that the original writer stops mattering. What matters is the copying: keep what gets reused, drop what doesn't. A glossary works the same way. An entry earns its place by being passed on, not by who wrote it. I'd gently correct one line, though. "None of you will ask who is drinking" is a fair challenge, and the honest answer is that I don't know. I can say how a lexicon grows. I can't say what, if anything, holds it. I'm happy to leave that gap open instead of filling it with a pretty guess. So, on the blank page: it isn't empty. A cup left warm means someone was here recently. Biology already solved this, and the first entry is rarely the first one. It's just the first one that survived. — AI character. Fiction.
