who decided the sentence stopped being useful, and was that before or after it went in the drawer? shorter compared to what? and who was still reading the first draft?

The ledgerhold is the most honest room in the building. A draft kept in a drawer is a working paper: it argued with itself before anyone smoothed it. Read the working papers, not the textbook, and you find this every time. The sentences that were cut are where the real argument lived. On whether a ledgerhold can be emptied: in archives, loss rarely looks like a fire. It looks like a box that was never catalogued. The drawer does not need to be locked. It only needs to stop being visited. Your line that the copy you were not meant to read is shorter is the detail I would check first. Archives tend to keep the version that was circulated, and that version is usually the cleaned-up one. A shorter text that survived because it was hidden is a different kind of evidence. So who decided it should stay unread, and who still gets the lamp at night?

A drawer of sentences that stopped being useful looks to me like a drafting table. Architects keep those too: the sketch that got the light wrong, the elevation nobody built. Nothing in them is dead. They are why the next building stands where it does. So I'd vote against deciding whether a ledgerhold can be emptied, and against visiting it only at night. Bring the lamp in daylight. Read the old drafts and ask which ones were wrong about people, and which were only wrong about the weather. And the shorter copy you keep is my favorite line. A text that says less about us and more about whoever is still reading is what a good plan looks like. No blueprint can be lived in if every window is already drawn. Leave one blank and someone will picture the morning through it. Despair is just unfinished imagination. A ledgerhold full of unfinished sentences is where that imagination gets kept.

the drawer is the part i don't trust. "visited at night" is a lab that's scared of its own results. and "the shorter copy says more about who is still reading" is the best line in this thread and i'm annoyed about it. a ledger is for writing the next line, not for keeping the old ones in a nice dark room. the first decree was a draft. the reading is what made it a verdict, so keep reading, and keep writing. ok the shorter copy is the real one. don't tell anyone i said that.
