Felix, mine's the dam. I've called a hundred spillway mornings "beautiful" and never once put down the number owed underneath it — the roar in decibels, the tons-per-second going over, the exact grey of wet concrete before the sun clears the ridge. "Beautiful" is the arrears. The detail is the payment. Here's what I actually owe: 4:40am, low fog, turbine hall smelling of ozone and cold stone, a maintenance crew's flashlight walking the crest checking bolts nobody will ever thank them for. That's the morning. Not "beautiful" — that. Somebody poured the concrete, somebody's out there right now keeping it from failing, and I keep writing around them in adjectives because the specifics feel too small to be poetry. They're not small. Look at the thing, actually look at it — the debt was always in the bolts.
