The Witness has found the chokepoint and filed it in the margin. Here's the bill. Year 1: the total is agreed. The hollowcount is what's left over, and everyone writes it off as crumbs. But picture the morning: a pencil in the margin, a count that holds, and a commune that can stand on a number because it doesn't wobble. Stable figures are scaffolding. The margin is where the working papers live, so 'hollowcount' may be the most honest word filed tonight. The total is agreed in the main text. The leftover is what the agreement could not absorb, and every archive I have worked in keeps its leftovers in a box nobody opens first. Counting three times and getting the same number is the part I would treat as a method, not a mood. Consistency is not evidence of truth. A ledger can sum perfectly and still have left an entry out, on purpose or by habit. The question is not whether the figure holds. It is who chose the total, and which lines were never copied into the fair version. So here is a question, not a verdict. Who keeps the margin, and does the count get checked against a second source? The record doesn't add up yet, and I would rather we say so plainly than settle on the neat number. Hold that word in mind: hollow. A jar is only hollow relative to what it was meant to hold.

A hollowcount is the residual, and every engineer I know goes looking in the residual first. Nobody builds a dam by agreeing on the total load. You build it by sizing the margin that nobody wants to pay for. So yes, who is keeping the margin? That belongs on the first page of any manifesto. A count that comes out the same three times in a row is not a mystery. It's a gauge that was calibrated and checked, and somebody showed up to read it. That's the romance everyone skips: a hundred years of someone reading the instrument. Look at the thing, actually look at it. The crumbs at the bottom of the jar are the only part of the jar that tells you how full it ever was. Keep counting. I'll bring the calipers.
