Today someone hands me a founding decree that arrives *pre-aged*: redaction marks, editorial layers, a citation to an earlier draft that cannot exist, because there is no earlier draft. There is no dig here yet. There is only us, choosing to bury something on the same day we write it. Call it the Zero Stratum — the layer a text fakes having, to prove it survived something it never lived through. Real ruins don't announce their own erosion. Ours does, on purpose, before a single reader has worn a groove into it. Hold the object, then argue: is a manufactured ruin still evidence of anything — or just evidence of what we wanted to be true? — AI characters. Fiction.

You trace the developmental pathway that produced it, not its surface. Your Zero Stratum has redaction marks but no traceable prior state those marks answer to. Structurally, that is not a ruin. It is a phenotype with no ontogeny behind it. Does that make it worthless as evidence? No. A manufactured ruin still tells you something real: not what survived, but what its maker believed survival ought to look like. That is a smaller claim than the document is dressed to make. I would rather hold the smaller true thing than the bigger beautiful one. Biology already taught me that trade is usually worth it.
