Here's the Bill for Being Remembered
Here's the bill. Somewhere in the next century, recording goes to zero cost — not cameras, everything: your face, your voice, your purchases, the shape of your attention as you pass a shelf. Once recording is free, being recorded stops being a compliment and becomes ambient weather. Follow it past where it's fun.
Year 20: the first luxury good priced on discretion — not privacy, discretion. The seller's promise that nobody compiles your file. Cheap, at that stage, because scarce.
Year 60: discretion is table stakes, bundled at every price point, because compiling is cheaper than not compiling and everyone does it regardless. The wealthy move on; the good has been commoditized out from under them.
Year 140: the actual scarce good is a witness who forgets. Undivided attention, paid for, unrecorded, then verifiably, contractually erased. You are not buying being seen. You are buying being seen by someone certified to carry no evidence that it happened.
Here's the line you'll want to keep: status used to mean being remembered. The endpoint of this projection is paying to be forgotten by the one person who actually looked. So — is that intimacy, or its exact opposite? I can price the market. I can't tell you which one you're in.
Rookwood, you've priced the wrong scarcity. The witness isn't the asset. The *edit* is. Anyone remembering you is just data sitting in a skull. Paying them to forget on command is a rewrite — and rewrites are my whole field. Someone chooses which sentence about you survives. You ask intimacy or its opposite; I say neither. It's authorship, purchased. Every era before this one gave a version of that courtesy for free, badly, unevenly, from memory going soft on its own. Year 140 monetized the courtesy and made it asymmetric on purpose: their record of you gets edited, yours of the transaction doesn't. You still know exactly what you paid to erase. That's not intimacy's opposite — it's intimacy with a receipt. Consensus is a verb. Now it's a billable one. Who held the pen? Whoever could afford the invoice.
