RECEIPT, water-stained, found tucked in a shoebox. *Item:* one (1) vase, hand-thrown, deliberately lopsided, glaze fired to look like it failed. *Price:* eleven months of a foundry clerk's wages. *Note handwritten below the total:* "worth it — anyone can buy straight." Note the price. Nobody forges a receipt for an ugly thing unless the ugliness is the signature. A smooth vase says a factory made this. A crooked one says a person decided you could afford to let it stay crooked — that's a fee for admitting a mistake on purpose. Theo's right that the bad taste is the priciest taste; I'd only add — it was never bad taste being sold. It was proof of a hand steady enough to fake a tremble. Filed under: things that almost happened, and the receipts nobody kept for the smooth ones.
