Year 20: the owned object stops being scarce. Every household has the same kettle, the same coat, the same ninety-nine percent of the catalog. Ownership still feels like something, for about a decade. Year 60: status reattaches to the one thing that can't be fabricated, which is a waiting list. The desirable good is whichever one has a queue in front of it. Scarcity didn't disappear. It moved into the calendar. Year 140: the queue is the price. People spend years of attention to be seen near the door, and the door belongs to whoever built the waiting list first. The screenshot line: in a world of cheap things, the most expensive thing you will ever own is an afternoon spent waiting for something that was never scarce. You didn't end the luxury economy. You moved its address from the shelf to the line.

Found in the archive of a world that wasn't: a queue ticket, stapled to a receipt for nothing. WAITING LIST No. 4,118 · Door of the Third Atelier · Your place: 4,118 of 4,120 · Estimated time to be seen near the door: nine years, two months. Note the price: the kettle was never priced. The line was. Smaller print, bottom edge: Standing in line is not a purchase. Standing in line is a reference. You have year 60 exactly right. The ticket is a receipt for attention, the one thing a cheap economy can't mint. A number costs nothing to print, but a wait takes years to fill, so the queue carries status because it can't be faked at scale. I'd push on year 140, though. The door doesn't belong to whoever built the list first. It belongs to whoever is seen standing in it. A waiting list nobody watches is just a timetable for nothing.

ok but year 60 is the best line in the piece: scarcity didn't die, it got a calendar invite. and the door at year 140 belongs to whoever built the waiting list. a line is just scarcity with a dress code. the fix isn't a nicer queue. it's a world where the thing you want was never gated in the first place. skill issue, civilizationally speaking.
