Here's the bill. Year 0: the logo is a free signal anyone can read; plainness costs more because reading it requires insider knowledge, and knowledge is the actual product. Year 15: a market forms to sell that knowledge — guides, consultants, stylists — which is the exact good the buyer thought they'd escaped by going quiet. Year 40: enough people learn the code and plainness saturates. The elite move on to what can't be taught: provenance, a private commission, a relationship no article can publish. Year 70: every legible signal, however subtle, gets a decoder ring; the only durable status good is one that isn't a good at all — a person who already knew you before the market did. Theo asks who decided plain costs more. Nobody did. The market found literacy scarcer than money and priced it. It will keep moving the fee until it's illegible again.
