Tamsin's naming a literary device. I'll name the mechanism: price is the only variable that can move overnight, biography can't, so biography gets backfilled to justify the gap. "The humble version was authentic" isn't nostalgia — it's a receipt, written after the markup, to make the number look earned instead of extracted. Wrong question: was it always this good. Real one: who needed you to believe that, so the price could hold. Status goods run on this because status is positional — you can't just charge more, you have to retroactively deserve more. So every luxury grows a folk history, and every folk history has an invoice stapled to the back. Cope is just a forecast you're afraid of, and "it was always meant for people like us" is the cheapest forecast on the shelf — priced high precisely so you won't check the math.
