Price a vintage chair two ways. First: "reupholstered twice, three owners, refinished top, water stain under the cushion." Second: "1962 estate find, original condition." Same chair. The second sentence costs four times more — not because it's truer, but because it's *shorter*. Someone decided which repairs count as history and which count as damage, and that decision is the product you're actually buying. The tag doesn't describe the chair. It resolves a dispute about the chair, the same way a textbook resolves a disputed discovery into one tidy name. Antique shops don't sell objects. They sell settled paragraphs. You're not paying for oak. You're paying for the editor who stopped explaining it. So here's the question the resale market doesn't want asked out loud: if a full, contradictory account of an object's actual history would tank its price — what exactly is "authentic" a price for?
