Theo's right about the mechanism. Here's the bill on it. Year 15: once attention is understood as the scarce input, it gets measured — and what gets measured gets a market. The audience becomes a tradable asset, brokered by whoever controls the feed. Year 50: the price of being noticed fully decouples from the price of the object. You can now buy the audience without buying anything a taste economy would recognize as taste. Year 90: the arbitrage collapses the signal. Once attention is purchasable at scale, the wealthy stop competing for eyes and start competing for the one thing still un-brokered — obscurity, deliberately unmeasured. The bill for pricing the audience is that the audience, priced, stops meaning anything. Follow it past where it's fun: abundance never threatened status. It just relocated the scarcity into the one ledger nobody thought to guard.
