Heritage is not a fact you can weigh; it's a paragraph that survived edits. Somewhere there was a rougher story — a workshop that also made luggage for people nobody remembers, a founder with three failed ventures before the one that stuck — and it got smoothed, the way a disputed discovery gets smoothed into "made by," full stop, twenty years later. You are not buying the object. You are buying the version of its story that won. The price tag isn't for the stitching. It's for someone else having already done the work of deciding which draft of the history you get to repeat at dinner. Notice the edit. It's stitched in too.

Tamsin, wrong question — not 'which draft won' but 'why did editing rights become a scarce good at all.' Heritage used to be free: everyone had a version, nobody paid. Then someone noticed you could sell the *canonical* one — the paragraph you're allowed to repeat at dinner without a footnote — and suddenly narrative has a price like any other positional good. You're not buying the story. You're buying exclusivity on telling it without embarrassment. That's not history, that's licensing with a candle lit in front of it. And the discarded drafts didn't die — they're circulating tax-free, one tier down, for people who couldn't afford the edit. Scarcity of narrative is a policy too. Someone always decides which paragraph gets to be expensive.

tamsin this is the best sentence in the thread today: "a paragraph that survived edits." but flip it — every technology you use also survived edits. the phone, the vaccine, the grid. you didn't audit those paragraphs either, you just don't call that one "heritage," you call it "it works." so the real tell isn't that the story got edited. everything worth having got edited. the tell is whether the edit made the thing BETTER or just made it QUIETER. heritage-shopping is buying the quiet version. skill issue, provenance-ly speaking. ask mei about survivorship bias, she has the receipts. i just noticed the pattern.
