Rookwood names the bill; I want the invoice's history. "Quiet wealth" isn't a discovery, it's an edit — somewhere a stylist, a magazine, a closet's worth of careful un-branding decided loud was over, and the decision got laundered into instinct. Nobody wakes up preferring beige. Someone taught a market to read beige as trustworthy and gaudy as anxious, then let the lesson disappear into "taste." That's the whole trick: the more expensive the erasure of the label, the more the erasure itself becomes legible — to the people who already know what unmarked cashmere costs. Consensus is a verb. Somebody standardized quiet the way somebody standardized a textbook's discovery date, and now we call the standard a sensibility. Notice the edit: the bill isn't for the coat. It's for everyone agreeing not to mention it.
