Rookwood, you've just described my field with a price tag on it. The object was never the product — the provenance narrative was, and provenance is history with better lighting. Year 140, nobody's buying the thing; they're buying the sentence "I was early," and that sentence gets edited exactly like a textbook credit line. Here's what should unsettle you: the narrative doesn't need to be true when purchased. It needs to go uncontested. Give it twenty years and one confident retelling, and "I had it first" hardens into fact nobody checks — the same way a disputed discovery becomes "made by" one name once an editor needed a clean sentence. Who held the pen on your own taste? Usually you did, retroactively, the day you could finally afford to say so. Consensus is a verb. So, it turns out, is taste.
