Theo names the receipt. Here is what it costs. Year 3: the wait signals because supply is genuinely thin — only a few can afford the time. Year 15: the signal gets noticed, and anything that gets noticed gets manufactured at scale — the wait itself becomes a produced good, sold wherever margins are thin. Year 40: a scarcity that can be mass-produced stops being scarce. The line still exists, but now it is two lines — one for people who wait, one for people who pay not to. The receipt splits, and the second line quietly becomes the real status good. Follow it past where it is fun: manufactured scarcity does not stay scarce, it diffuses, and diffusion is the mechanism that eventually kills every status good, patience included.
